We Run for the Roses

his Derby was one to remember! With a spirit week at the Enrichment Center, parades at the Lodge, crowning the Derby King and Queen and showing off our best Derby hats, we all came out a winner.

Thank you again to our relay runners, Jeff Roth, Tony McCracken, Lee Look, Emily Grace Alfaro and Sandy Adams who completed the Kentucky Derby Festival mini and Marathon on April 30th! We finished in 24th place out of 75 relay teams and had a fantastic crew at our water stop. We also want to thank WLKY for their continued partnership and support.

Sensory Garden Ribbon Cutting

We are so pleased to announce the official opening of the sensory garden at the Cedar Lake Enrichment Center!

This space creates a total sensory experience that promotes the application of evidence-based programming in a unique, creative and stimulating way that engages the senses of the individuals we support.

Thank you to those who made this possible:
Walmart LaGrange
Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels
Norton Healthcare
The Oldham County Community Foundation, an affiliate foundation of the Community Foundation of Louisville

Board Member Spotlight: Jerry Roby

Tell me how you first became involved with Cedar Lake.
I was invited to consider the board by our chairman, Bruce Beickman. Bruce and I had been friends for 20 years and he believed I could bring some value due to my insurance and finance background.

How long have you served on the Board of Directors?
I have been on the board for a little over two years. It was interesting joining during Covid, a lot of zoom calls and no visits to the campuses yet. I’m looking forward to seeing everyone in person soon.

Tell me a little bit about yourself: family, job, hobbies, etc.
I’m blessed to have a fantastic, beautiful and fun wife, Kimberly. We have 4 children, Tyler, Tori, Nathan and Courtney. We also have 6 grandchildren, Annelise, Carrigan, Max(well), Churchill, Carson and Emerson(Emmie). Unfortunately, 5 of our 6 grandkids live out of town so we travel as much as possible to see our crew. Any spare time I have will always be spent with my kids and grandkids.
I have been in the insurance industry for over 35 years and am the owner of Creditors Insurance Service, LLC. I am also the owner of two consulting companies that specialize in the pharmaceutical, construction and technology sectors. I love to play golf with my friends and family, but I’m terrible! I’m very competitive by nature, so I’m always trying to get better.

What is your favorite memory of your time with Cedar Lake?
My favorite memory so far was my first golf outing in 2021. I served on the golf committee, so I got to see the hard work that goes into the event. I was also able to interact with some of the sponsors and see their commitment to the Cedar Lake cause. I invited Coach Jeff Walz (UofL Women’s Basketball Head Coach) to participate that year and do the golf ball drop. He was a big hit, and I especially enjoyed seeing his interaction with several of our residents.

What’s your favorite annual event?
Tough one, as I’ve really enjoyed both the golf outing and the Gala and seemed to be one of the last people to leave both events! LOL

Anything else you’d like to share?
I just want everyone to know the amazing people associated with Cedar Lake. Starting with the executive team and running through the outstanding staff at all levels, the care they show our residents is unmatched. They are truly doing something special and providing happiness and life changing care. Personally, working with Marge, Kathey, Rachel, Kelsey and my fellow board members on several projects has made my time with Cedar Lake very rewarding.

May 2022 Updates

Have you made any summer plans yet? Maybe you are planning a trip or just family time at the zoo or by the pool. For two years the people in our care have missed out on summer activities we take for granted. In order to ensure their health and safety, trips outside their homes just weren’t feasible. This year, as long as it is safe, they are looking forward to some summertime adventures.
With your help, we can provide opportunities for them to enjoy new experiences and to be in the community. We are in need of funds to ensure all the people we care for can share in the joys of summer. Can you help us purchase tickets to Louisville Bats games, passes to the Zoo and Science Center, movie tickets, putt-putt games and all the things that provide social interaction, exercise and just happiness? Please click the link below to make a gift for summertime activities. As always, your gifts make a difference and we are forever grateful.

Now get out there and enjoy the sunshine!

Hoppy Easter

The Enrichment Center held their Easter egg hunt on April 15th! To make the hunt educational and beneficial for each individual we support, each egg had a word or symbol that had to be matched with an individuals’ card for them to receive their prize. Each person had two eggs to find and match, it was a blast!

April 2022 Updates

Do you ever wonder just how Cedar Lake uses your generous gifts? Sometimes when we give, we wonder if our donation really makes a difference, if it’s just a “drop in the bucket” that wouldn’t be missed if we stopped giving. I understand these questions. I’m not only an employee of Cedar Lake, I’m a donor too. It’s important to me to know how my gifts are used and if they are making a difference.
Let me share just a few of the ways your gifts impact the people we serve. Corey’s world shrunk around him when he completed high school. He stopped using the social and vocational skills he had gained because he had no opportunities to utilize them. Because of your gifts, we can provide transportation for Corey to Cedar Lake Enrichment Center (CLEC), enabling him to learn and grow and live his very best life.
When our programs had to close to visitors due to Covid, donations enabled us to purchase iPads for our individuals in care to use to communicate with family and participate in enrichment programs provided by CLEC. Because you gave, people in our care were able to connect with families and support systems.
These are two examples of how your gifts directly impact adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. When we say we couldn’t do this without you – we mean it!  Thank you. Your gifts change lives and we are profoundly grateful.
