For Kasey Koontz, Cedar Lake Lodge is more than a workplace — it’s a calling. Since joining the organization in December 2019, Kasey has become a cornerstone of the Direct Support Professional (DSP) department, steadily growing into her current role as Assistant Director. Her journey, marked by compassion, and connection, reflects the heart of Cedar Lake’s mission.
Kasey came to Cedar Lake from a nursing background in long-term care, seeking a change that would allow her to connect more deeply with those she supported. Hired as a DSP Supervisor, her experience as an LPN and CNA was quickly put to the test when the COVID-19 pandemic hit only months after she started. Even while still learning the ropes, she stepped up — filling in on the floor, supporting the team, and forming bonds that would shape the rest of her Cedar Lake journey.
“Being on the floor during the pandemic gave me a chance to really get to know the staff and the individuals. It’s where those lasting relationships were built.”
A Rewarding Career
Ask Kasey about the individuals Cedar Lake supports, and her face lights up. She’s quick to mention Mark and Bobby, two residents whose humor and spirit bring joy to her days. “You end up falling in love with each person here for different reasons,” she says. “Watching them work on their goals and feel proud of their progress — that’s the most rewarding part.”
In June 2024, Kasey stepped into the role of Assistant Director. Now overseeing a team of eight, she manages everything from scheduling and investigations to policy implementation and staff training. She’s passionate about leadership and mentorship — about lifting others up and helping them grow. “I love coaching people,” she says. “It’s inspiring to watch someone want to better themselves, and I get to help guide them there.”
Even with her administrative responsibilities, Kasey makes time to stay connected with the people Cedar Lake serves. Whether assisting with transfers or participating in festive events like the Derby week celebrations and pop-up dance parties, she’s a familiar and friendly face throughout the Lodge.
Family Ties at Cedar Lake
Family plays a big role in Kasey’s Cedar Lake story. She’s married to Kris, a fellow Cedar Lake employee she’s known since high school, and together they’re raising two young children. Their kids love attending Cedar Lake’s Family Fest and Christmas Wonderland, and Kasey is intentional about exposing them to the beauty of diversity. Her personal connection to intellectual disabilities runs deep — her cousin, whom she’s always considered a brother, has autism. That bond shaped her path, and today, she sees Cedar Lake as the kind of place every family hopes for.

“This place is hopeful,” she says with emotion. “It gives families peace of mind. It gives people purpose, and the space to be celebrated.”
Kasey’s legacy is one of kindness, dedication, and hope. Whether she’s supporting staff, mentoring new leaders, or making individuals smile, she’s creating a culture of care that will last long after her shift ends.
“I hope that when people look back, they see that I left a good legacy,” she says quietly. “One built on kindness and strong relationships.”
At Cedar Lake Lodge, Kasey Koontz is helping others grow, find joy, and feel seen — and in doing so, she’s exactly where she’s meant to be.
