A legacy of compassion sums up Amanda Riordan. For Amanda, Cedar Lake Lodge is more than just a workplace—it’s a second home. Her journey with Cedar Lake began at the age of 13, a path laid out by her mother, Lisa, who has worked at Cedar Lake for 25 years. Amanda’s early volunteer work at Cedar Lake paved the way for her official employment at 17, marking the beginning of what has become a remarkable 21-year tenure.

Throughout her two decades at Cedar Lake, Amanda has worn many hats. From her initial role as a direct support professional to her time as a recreation assistant, coordinator, and PRN DSP, her versatility and commitment have been unwavering. She has even lent her talents to housekeeping and Certified Medical Technician (CMT) duties. Her most recent position as a Health Services Aide (HSA) has seen her dedicate the last four years to an essential role that balances meticulous planning with compassionate care.

Life as a Health Services Aide

Amanda’s role as an HSA involves much more than just administrative tasks. She coordinates appointments, follows up on physician orders, and advocates for the individuals she supports. Her presence is a beacon of calm during often anxiety-inducing medical appointments. Understanding that each person’s needs are unique, Amanda goes the extra mile to personalize her approach—whether through soothing music, sensory toys, or engaging movies. Her goal is to create a supportive environment that makes each visit as stress-free as possible.

“I like to be the one to hold their hand,” Amanda shares, reflecting on her deep commitment to providing comfort and reassurance. Her approach is rooted in building genuine, trusting relationships with all the individuals she supports. This personal connection, she believes, is fundamental to delivering the highest quality of care.

Amanda’s dedication has not gone unnoticed. She was honored with the Leading Age Kentucky 2016 Quality of Life Award and the 2022 Cedar Lake Jericho Friends Award, accolades that recognize her exceptional contributions to the lives of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

What keeps Amanda at Cedar Lake is the profound sense of family and shared purpose she feels with her colleagues. “Each department that I have experienced at Cedar Lake Lodge creates a family environment where everyone listens to each other and supports one another. Everyone who works here is for the right reason,” she explains. This strong sense of community and commitment to person-centered care fuels her passion and dedication.

Amanda Riordan’s story stands as a testament to the profound impact one person can have over the course of a career. Her unwavering support, compassionate care, and dedication exemplify the spirit of Cedar Lake, making her not just an employee, but a cherished member of a family that extends far beyond the walls of the organization.
