Amy Lawler: 34 Years of Dedicated Support

For Amy Lawler, physical therapist assistant, Cedar Lake has been more than just a workplace; it has been a calling, a family, and a place to grow both personally and professionally. Her journey began in January 1991, as a physical therapy aide, but her story with Cedar Lake started even earlier, during a moment that remains vivid in her memory.

“I interviewed right before Christmas, and there were several individuals in the chapel at Cedar Lake Lodge. The lights were low, and they were practicing a Christmas program. When I walked in and heard them singing, I immediately thought, ‘This is where I want to be and what I want to do.’ I have never lost sight of that.”

A Foundation of Inspiration

Amy’s interest in physical therapy began with her grandmother’s rehabilitation needs, which ignited her passion for helping others. Before joining Cedar Lake, she worked at a facility in Indiana but found her ambitions limited by scheduling conflicts. A search for a more supportive environment led her to Cedar Lake Lodge. After knocking on the door and applying one weekend, everything seemed to fall into place. “It was God’s will,” she reflects.

Cedar Lake’s support extended beyond her job. The organization worked with Amy to help her achieve her educational goals, allowing her to earn an associate in applied science from Jefferson County Community College. This unwavering encouragement solidified her commitment to Cedar Lake’s mission.

Amy’s career has spanned significant transitions. From 1991 to 2018, she primarily worked at Cedar Lake Lodge. Between 2015 and 2018, her role expanded to include Park Place and Sycamore Run, where she transitioned fully in 2018. These smaller settings have allowed her to deepen her impact on the lives of those she supports.

“In the early days, everyone was together on the main campus at Cedar Lake Lodge, including administrative offices. As we grew, group homes and community apartments allowed us to be more visible in the community. Growing pains are hard, but as Cedar Lake has expanded, so has our ability to help more people.”

Despite the company’s growth, the familial atmosphere has persisted. Amy treasures the strong relationships she’s built with individuals and their families, especially through initiatives like family days, where meals and fellowship foster closer connections.

Making a Difference Every Day

Reflecting on her time at Park Place and Sycamore Run, Amy says, “I feel like I can make more of a difference in an individual’s life in a smaller setting. We offer the same level of care and meet their needs in a more intimate environment.”

Amy’s dedication extends beyond her professional role. “My goal in life is to retire at some point, but I never want to break ties with two special ladies I treat. Perhaps we’ll go out for manicures and lunch,” she reflects. “For the last 34 years, Cedar Lake has been my family.”

Supporting Individuals Through Life’s Changes

As individuals have aged, Amy has adapted her care to meet their evolving needs. “When Mike came to Cedar Lake, he was independently ambulatory. Now, he requires specialized equipment and shorter distances for walking. Through every challenge, we’ve worked to keep him as independent as possible.”

Using innovative treatments, Amy and her team improve mobility and comfort, ensuring individuals maintain strength and functionality. “Cedar Lake affords you the flexibility to focus on activities that benefit individuals the most,” she says. “My role is to help them maintain their current abilities for as long as possible, so they can remain safe and independent.”

For Amy Lawler, every day at Cedar Lake reaffirms her decision to join the organization. “When I come to Park Place and see the faces of my friends there, I know that life is okay and everything is fine. The relationships we’ve built make a difference in our lives and theirs.”

After 34 years, Amy’s passion and commitment continue to shine, making her an invaluable part of the Cedar Lake family and an inspiration to all who know her. Her journey reflects the heart and mission of Cedar Lake—a place where individuals and staff grow together, supported by love, care, and a shared vision of independence and fulfillment.
