Danyel Tingel: A Journey of Dedication and Growth at Cedar Lake

Danyel Tingel Cedar Lake

For Danyel Tingel, what began as a leap of faith into the world of caring for others has blossomed into a lifelong career filled with personal growth, meaningful connections, and unwavering dedication to Cedar Lake’s mission. Her story—spanning nearly three decades—is a testament to her passion for making a difference in the lives of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Danyel’s journey with Cedar Lake began in February 1996 when she was just 21 years old. Encouraged by her friend Shannon Rose, who was already working at Cedar Lake, Danyel started as a Direct Support Professional (DSP) at Cedar Lake Lodge on Maples Yellow. Her initial role involved supporting the men in the lodge, and she quickly found her footing in the rewarding yet challenging environment. Over time, she transitioned to a Behavior Technician, helping to address and manage behavioral needs.

“The first day I was really scared,” she recalls, “but for no reason. I quickly realized how much I loved the clients and the work.”

After seven years at the Lodge, Danyel’s career path led her to Cedar Lake Residences (CLR). She started as a DSP at a group home, where she supported individuals in their day-to-day lives, and eventually became a coordinator for CLR’s residential clusters. “It was fun, and we had a great team,” she shares. “There was so much unity. I was responsible for direct care and ensuring everything ran smoothly, including completing all the necessary paperwork.”

At one point, Danyel also worked with Christopher East’s brain injury unit, collecting data and addressing behavioral challenges. Her ability to adapt and thrive in diverse roles within Cedar Lake highlights her commitment to serving individuals with varying needs.

In August 2022, Danyel transitioned to Sycamore Run, one of Cedar Lake’s intermediate care facilities. “I think Sycamore Run is the ‘best of the best,’” she says. Initially working a 9-to-5 schedule, she later opted for three 12-hour shifts, which allowed her to focus more deeply on direct care. “When I moved to Sycamore Run, I got back to what I really love: providing personal care and meeting needs in a hands-on way.”

Danyel’s role at Sycamore Run includes coordinating appointments, assisting with daily activities, and sharing life experiences with the individuals she supports. “I love cooking with them, taking them out to get their nails done, and enjoying one-on-one time,” she says. “There’s a lot of love going around, both from us and them. They’ve taught me to be a better parent and a better person.”

The close-knit team at Sycamore Run is another source of pride for Danyel. “We have a really great team,” she notes. “And Cedar Lake’s support extends not just to the clients but to the employees. They care about helping us grow our careers and supporting our education.”

Throughout her time at Cedar Lake, Danyel has witnessed significant changes, but one thing has remained constant: the rewarding nature of her work. “The people we take care of are amazing, and that will never change,” she says. “Working with people with disabilities is the most rewarding job you will ever have. You’re not just giving; you’re also getting.”

Outside of work, Danyel enjoys hiking, horseback riding, and spending time with her family. She met her husband, Troy Tingel, at Cedar Lake, where he worked as a DSP and later became Director of Health Services. Their daughter Grace and son have also volunteered at Cedar Lake, continuing the family’s legacy of service.

Reflecting on her journey, Danyel says, “Cedar Lake is a very unique place. It’s a niche in the services we provide, and it’s filled with dedicated, long-term staff who love what they do. I feel blessed to work at a job I truly enjoy.”

For Danyel Tingel, Cedar Lake is more than just a workplace—it’s a community that has shaped her life, career, and character. Her story exemplifies the profound impact of dedication, compassion, and the joy of making a difference every day.
