Volunteering is more than just giving time; it’s about making meaningful connections and contributing to the betterment of others. Recently, a group of volunteers from Zeon Chemicals experienced this firsthand at the Cedar Lake Enrichment Center (CLEC), where they spent an afternoon crafting fall-themed decorations with individuals supported by Cedar Lake. For these volunteers, including Mark Cooksey, who serves on both the Cedar Lake Inc. Board and the Cedar Lake Foundation Board, the experience was much more than a team-building exercise—it was a chance to witness the profound joy and focus of the individuals supported by Cedar Lake.
Zeon Chemicals and Cedar Lake
Zeon Chemicals, a Louisville-based manufacturer of synthetic elastomers, has long been dedicated to supporting non-profits, including Cedar Lake. Zeon supports many local and national charities from its three locations in Louisville, KY, Hattiesburg, MS, and Pasadena, TX. Its connection to Cedar Lake began three years ago through participation in the Cedar Lake Golf Tournament, and the commitment has only grown. Zeon’s Helping Hands Committee, an employee-led group, coordinates the company’s volunteer efforts, ensuring that the team stays engaged in community service throughout the year. In addition to supporting schools, Dare to Care, and the VFW post, Zeon chooses one charity annually to focus on, raising funds and organizing multiple events.
Importance of Volunteering
When Zeon employees visited CLEC, five team members joined individuals for a hands-on crafting session, creating beautiful fall-themed decorations. What struck Mark Cooksey the most was the joy and dedication of the individuals supported by Cedar Lake. “The intensity of focus and the variety of interactions really stood out to me,” Mark said. “Volunteering gave us a better sense of the spectrum of individuals Cedar Lake supports. It was an eye-opening experience to see how the staff engages with and supports everyone there.”
Mark emphasized the importance of business involvement in volunteering, encouraging other companies to donate their “time, talent, and treasure” to organizations like Cedar Lake. “Giving back isn’t just about writing a check; it’s about using the talent within your company to make a difference. The few hours I spent at Cedar Lake gave me a better understanding of how our staff works with the individuals supported, and I strongly encourage others to do the same. It’s a mutually beneficial experience.”
Allowing employees the opportunity to volunteer not only benefits the community but also enhances employee engagement and morale. “It builds culture within the company and helps with employee retention,” Mark explained. “Being willing to give time and talent to non-profit organizations goes a long way, and ultimately, it pays back for the business.”
For the Zeon volunteers, many of whom were new to Cedar Lake, the experience was enlightening. “They didn’t know much about Cedar Lake going in, but after our visit, they left with a deep appreciation for the staff and the individuals supported. We all walked away realizing how many people at Cedar Lake find great joy in their lives, and that’s something we need to appreciate.”
Volunteering with Cedar Lake not only provides perspective but also helps to build goodwill in the community. As Mark reflected, “Cedar Lake serves a highly critical role for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. It’s an honor to support an organization that does such important work, and I believe it’s something every business should consider. There are so many ways to serve, and the impact is immeasurable.”
Committed to Louisville
Zeon Chemicals is highly committed to the Louisville area, and their volunteer work is a testament to their belief that giving back is the right thing to do—not just for the community but for the company itself. “It’s good for the organization to volunteer,” Mark said. “It builds brand recognition and strengthens relationships within the company and with the community. We are proud to support Cedar Lake and look forward to continuing this partnership.”
In today’s fast-paced world, volunteering may seem like a small act, but it carries profound implications for non-profits like Cedar Lake. By giving their time, Zeon Chemicals is helping to ensure that individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities continue to receive the support they need to live fulfilling lives—and that’s a gift that goes far beyond a few hours of crafting. It’s a lasting contribution that strengthens both the volunteer and the community.
