Norma’s journey with Cedar Lake began 50 years ago, marking her as one of the first individuals supported by the organization. Her story is one of resilience, warmth, and unwavering spirit. Originally from Louisville, Norma’s life took a drastic turn when, at just three years old, she was hit by a car near her home, resulting in injuries that limited her mobility and caused fevers that resulted in a diagnosis of Intellectual and Developmental Disability (IDD). Despite these early life challenges, Norma has continuously demonstrated her incredible capabilities and zest for life. In reflecting on Norma’s time at Cedar Lake, her brother Phil said, “Cedar Lake has been a lifesaver for all of us and Norma.”
Days at Cedar Lake
Norma’s days at Cedar Lake are filled with activity and social interaction. A lover of coffee, Norma enjoys her daily cup around 10 a.m., often sharing her plans for the day with those around her. Her social nature makes her a beloved figure at Cedar Lake Lodge, as she eagerly engages with everyone she meets.
Her kindness and empathy truly endear her to others. Described as a “social butterfly,” she consistently brings joy and warmth to her community. Norma’s brother Phil said, “When Norma sees someone, she asks if they are okay and if they are having a good day. She is sympathetic to the feelings of others.” In true form, when Phil was going through recent health struggles, Norma would call to check in on him to make sure he was fine. As Phil’s older sister, they have a great relationship, often just enjoying the company of each other and catching up on what is going on in their respective lives.
Norma’s Talents
For Norma, music holds a special place in her heart. With her great memory she can rattle off the lyrics to her favorite songs, so get ready for a singalong! Nowadays, she often visits the chapel just to enjoy the melodies.
Norma’s talents extend beyond social interactions; she is also a passionate painter and cook. Her friends cherish her for her nurturing nature, which earned her the Mother Goose award last year. She is always ready to greet people in the morning with a smile and a kind word, and she has formed strong, lasting friendships with many, including Amy and Teri, with whom she enjoys doing puzzles.
Norma’s independence is remarkable. Though she was at Cedar Lake for many years, she transitioned to a 24-hour staffed residence for more than a decade, eventually returning to Cedar Lake Lodge in 2023. She is a strong self-advocate, actively participating in her care and using a motorized scooter with the help of physical therapy.
Norma says her favorite Cedar Lake meal is meatloaf, mashed potatoes, and green beans; we agree it’s good! Norma often spends time on the patio chatting with staff, especially Ashley, her dedicated DSP. Norma’s empathetic and gentle manner in conversations reflects her deep sense of compassion for others.
