At Cedar Lake, we believe in the power of meaningful work through supported employement. Supported employment offers individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities the opportunity to thrive in the workforce while bringing unique talents and perspectives to employers. Through a person-centered approach, our program fosters partnerships that benefit both employees and businesses alike.
What is Supported Employment
Supported employment is a customized service designed to assist individuals with disabilities in discovering their strengths, interests, and abilities to secure meaningful jobs. Cedar Lake’s Supported Employment Specialists work closely with individuals to identify opportunities that align with their passions and skills. The goal is to ensure that every employee is placed in a role where they can succeed and contribute.
Employers partnering with Cedar Lake gain access to motivated and dedicated workers who are supported by a Community Integration Specialist (CIS). This job coach provides tailored on-the-job training and support, starting with frequent visits and gradually tapering as the employee grows more confident and independent in their role. This seamless support system ensures a smooth transition for both employer and employee.
Why Hire Through Supported Employment?
Hiring an individual through Cedar Lake’s Supported Employment Program is not only a step toward fostering workplace diversity but also comes with tangible benefits:
- Tax Incentives: Employers hiring individuals who receive services through the Office of Vocational Rehabilitation (OVR) may qualify for a tax credit.
- Dedicated Support: The CIS provides ongoing assistance to ensure job duties are met and employees are thriving.
- Enhanced Workplace Culture: Inclusive hiring practices promote a sense of community and belonging in the workplace.
Employment: More Than a Paycheck
Employment holds immense significance for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. It shapes personal identity, builds confidence, and fulfills the universal need to contribute to society. At Cedar Lake, we emphasize that work is about more than earning a salary—it’s about creating connections and fostering a sense of purpose.
Kentucky: An Employment First State
As an Employment First State, Kentucky prioritizes employment as the first and preferred option for individuals with disabilities. Cedar Lake supports this mission by advocating for inclusive hiring practices that offer individuals opportunities to grow, learn, and excel in their careers.
