Isaac’s Journey to Cedar Lake Lodge

Isaac was diagnosed with developmental delays as a young child. Stephanie recalls the early milestones being harder to reach: “He began walking at age 3 after early physical therapy, and there were countless evaluations and therapies to determine what would help him succeed.” Norton Children’s Bingham Clinic played a pivotal role in diagnosing Isaac and paving the way for his care, which later included pharmacological treatments to help him manage his behavior.

Isaac’s education journey reflected his strengths and needs. After attending Norton and Hite Elementary Schools, he completed his education at the Binet School, a specialized JCPS program serving students with intellectual and developmental disabilities. At Binet, Isaac’s growth blossomed as he engaged with mentor students from Seneca High School, fostering peer interactions and strengthening his sense of community.

As he grew older, Isaac’s needs became more demanding, and it became increasingly challenging for Stephanie and Michael to manage on their own. “My life revolved around Isaac’s schedule,” Stephanie shared. “It was hard, but it was worth it.” While Isaac worked at Walgreens and attended the Apple Patch day program, Stephanie and Michael sought a long-term solution.

Isaac Finds a Home at Cedar Lake Lodge

In 2018, after five years on the waiting list, Isaac transitioned to Cedar Lake Lodge at age 29. The move felt like a milestone not unlike a young adult heading off to college. “We were very grateful for Cedar Lake,” said Stephanie. “It changed our lives 100%. Now, we can have a fun night to ourselves knowing Isaac is in the best care possible.”

At Cedar Lake, Isaac has flourished. The staff, whom Stephanie and Michael describe as “awesome and caring,” work tirelessly to ensure Isaac has opportunities to grow, enjoy his favorite activities, and stay connected with his family. From participating in Special Olympics and playing basketball at the YMCA, to attending day training at Cedar Lake Enrichment Center, Isaac leads a full and active life.

Staff Go the Extra Mile to Bring Meaningful Experiences

Staff go out of their way to make his experiences meaningful, organizing activities tailored to his interests. For Halloween, the Lodge transformed a hallway into a Scooby-Doo-themed wonderland, complete with costumes and decorations. Isaac also visited a Scooby-Doo exhibit at the Indianapolis Children’s Museum and attended the Taylor Swift: Eras Tour movie at a drive-in theater. “Everything they do for him is special and fun,” Stephanie said.

Isaac’s hobbies showcase his curiosity and zest for life. He loves reading, puzzles, card games with his dad, church, Dairy Queen trips, and visiting Pigeon Forge’s interactive museums. When excited, his joy is contagious, often expressed with his entire body. “Isaac is funny, curious, and content,”

For Stephanie and Michael, the greatest relief comes from knowing their daughters won’t bear the responsibility of supporting Isaac if something happens to them. “Cedar Lake is a godsend,” Michael said. “The full staff is welcoming, attentive, and always on top of things.”

Stephanie also emphasizes the importance of early diagnosis, advocating for stronger collaboration between medical doctors and mental health practitioners. Her advice to families starting similar journeys is clear: “Find the right places for diagnosis and support. It makes all the difference.”

At Cedar Lake, Isaac is not only cared for but celebrated. His happiness, combined with his family’s gratitude, is a testament to the organization’s mission. “I am so grateful for Cedar Lake,” Stephanie said. “It’s a blessing to know Isaac has access to services he needs to thrive.”
