In the serene corners of Cedar Lake is Sycamore Run, where compassion and dedication intertwine, Cristal Harney stands as a symbol of unwavering support and love. For 18 years, Cristal has been a cherished member of the Cedar Lake family, a journey that began with a personal mission rooted in her teenage years.
Cristal’s path to healthcare was illuminated by her grandfather’s diagnosis with cancer. It was during this time that her innate desire to help and support others blossomed. Her journey began with certification as a CMT and CNA, focusing on geriatric care. Before Cedar Lake, she worked in a nursing home, where the physical demands were rigorous. Transitioning to Cedar Lake, Cristal initially found the work mentally challenging but soon adapted to the unique and fulfilling environment.
Starting at Cedar Lake Lodge as a CMT and later providing direct support as a DSP. Her journey continued at Cedar Lake Park Place in New Castle, where she spent six years before finding her place at Sycamore Run, another one of Cedar Lake’s intermediate care facilities. Since December 2023, Cristal has been the unwavering support for four remarkable individuals at Sycamore Run, where her dual training as a CMT and DSP provides valuable flexibility.
Favorite Memories
Cristal’s favorite memories are filled with heartwarming moments. “It does something to your heart when you don’t see the guys for a little bit, and they are calling your name when they see you again,” she recalls fondly.
Cedar Lake, to Cristal, is more than just a workplace; it’s an extended family. She has seen the individuals she supports open up and thrive, often contrasting with their experiences in other settings. “I see them more than my own family,” Cristal reflects, underscoring the deep connections she has formed. She has taken individuals home for holidays, Bible school, and church, embracing them as part of her own family. This sentiment is shared by the families of those supported at Cedar Lake, who often go above and beyond to show appreciation for the staff. From bringing full Thanksgiving dinners to sending treats like ice cream, popcorn, and pizza, these gestures reinforce the strong sense of community.
Cristal’s advice to new staff is simple yet profound: don’t let the initial challenges overwhelm you. The first month can be daunting, but the rewards are immeasurable. She emphasizes the importance of the family atmosphere at Cedar Lake, where the support extends beyond the individuals to include their families. Families at Cedar Lake are staunch advocates for the staff, often asking what they can do to improve their work experience.
Unconditional Love
One of Cristal’s cherished activities is taking the guys on country rides, where they sing along to the radio and enjoy the scenery. These outings are a source of joy and connection, a reflection of the unconditional love that flows both ways. “You can get unconditional love from those we support. They do love us,” Cristal shares, a sentiment that beautifully encapsulates her experience at Cedar Lake.
